Monday, March 31, 2008 we were able to have a Skype video conference with our friend Rike who lives in Berlin, Germany. It was an awesome learning experience! We hope to be able to do more Skype conferences like this one in the future. Visit **Miss Brady's blog** to learn more about what was discussed during the session. Then, you can see the whole article with more pictures of the video conference on the**MISD Homepage** . Mrs. Gustin's apprentices wanted to use our blog to thank Rike for letting us visit her in Germany. Check out the comments to read our thoughts about our first Skype session.

Thank you so much for letting us come to visit you on Skype. We all learned things that we didn't know about Germany. I thought that it was especially interesting that you were on the east side of the wall before it came down. I appreciate all that you shared with the kids. They will very likely remember this experience for the rest of their lives. What a gift you have given us, by sharing your time and experiences. I look forward to meeting you in person next year.

HALLO guys!!!

first of all - you are awesome!!!I had sooo much fun talking to all of you. I wish it would have been daylight so that you could have seen more of my street.

The time difference can make things complicated but I hope I will get to talk to you very soon. I already forgot to count in Spanish - no spelling Bee for me.WAIT,is there a spelling BEE for counting at all? We have to come up with one!

And I will always remember how to say PANTHER :) Oh and "dog" - I was 6 1/2 when the wall came down.I wish I would remember more but I guess the memory comes back when I am 80 years old :) The wall was built in 1961.

I am so looking forward to see all of you later this year!

OH, hey let me know what you learned in school ... AND make a funny face for me!

KITTY - when I said I forgot how to count in Spanish I didn't mean that I also forgot you guys!!!HEL-LLOOOO, of course I will remember you too.Although, I have to admit that it might be difficult with the names AND the faces because I didn't see you when we skyped. So, I hope you will be patient with me when I come to see all of you :)

NAN - yes, the time difference is not fun at all. 7 hours is almost 1/3 of the day. Can you believe that? Wouldn't it be cool if there was the same time zone all over the world? One big firework on New Years. That would be awesome!Don't you think?

ANT - of course I can teach you more about the Berlin Wall.I will bring pictures of where I used to live and pieces of the wall. I am sooo looking forward to seeing you soon!!!

Good night and again ... make a funny face for me :)

Every year in Big Spring, Texas , there is a pretty awesome Independence Day celebration called "Pops in the Park". The celebration is modeled after Boston's "Pops Goes the Fourth" concert that I watch on T.V. The concert and fireworks display takes place in Comanche Trail Park . Every year, the city of Big Spring works hard to make sure that the celebration is even better than the year before. This summer, I thought the music and the fireworks were better than some that I have seen in the Houston area. "Pops in the Park 2007" was a great event. I can't wait to see what they do next year!

In social studies, we are learning about communities. We are learning about the laws, places, people and celebrations that take place in different kinds of communities. "Pops in the Park" is a Big Spring tradition. What are some ways you celebrate the 4th of July in your community? Click on commentsbelow, and let me know what you are thinking.

The fireworks were so cool. They blasted up into the sky behind the stage.
You're right. Yes, they were really cool! I love the way we were able listen to the orchestra play and watch the fireworks shoot up behind the stage. A few times the grass on the hill behind the stage caught on fire! I was really glad the firefighters were there to put out the flames. It was a good reminder of how careful you need to be when you are using fireworks.

While I was in New Mexico this summer, I was just down the road from one of the lunch stops for The Great American Race . The race is a two week event that started in Concord, North Carolina and ended in Anaheim, California. The event is run in timed segments. The team that runs closest to the target time wins that segment of the race. Over the two weeks, the team that has the closest times wins the event. At each rest stop along the route, race fans (like me) are allowed to get up close to the cars, take pictures and visit with the drivers and their navigators. I had a great time taking over 100 photos of all of the classic cars in Carrizozo, New Mexico .

I love the cars. I really like that shiny one and the red one too.

I'm glad that you liked the car pictures. Maybe one day you'll get to drive a car like one of these.

Yes, I love the gray car, too! I think it is my favorite.

They are old. I would like to have one of them.

I would love to have one of those cars myself. We do have a 1967 Cougar that we are restoring at home right now. We hope to be able to take it to car shows soon. It is a lot of fun to have a really cool old car.

You're right! It was a lot of fun. I'm really glad we went to see the cars and the drivers. I hope you have the chance to go see the Great American Race someday. It is a great experience!

The cars are pretty. I want to have a car someday. I like the silver car. I am going to get a car when I am 30.
The silver car is an Auburn. It is my dream car. I have always wanted an Auburn from the 1920's. I think mine would be a different color, though. I think that 30 years old is a very good age to get a car. I'm sure your parents agree.

I think the color red is a great color for a car. It attracts a lot of attention. Do you know what kind of red car you hope to have someday?

I'm glad that you liked the cars. I thought the army truck was cool, too. I love how all of the drivers fix their cars up in a very special way.

Jumping Geometry!
external image trans.gif
external image trans.gif
external image trans.gif
external image trans.gif
We have been exploring geometry in our Math Applications Workshop. Recently, we constructed three dimensional geometric solids using pretzel sticks and mini-marshmallows. We discovered that constructing pyramids takes patience and persistence. We also learned that constructing a cube with these building materials is not an easy thing to do. Mrs. Gustin offered a prize to anyone who could make a cube that would stand for 5 seconds without support. Alas, even with some great problem solving and teamwork, the prize went unclaimed.

Apprentice questions:
What did the pretzel sticks represent in our models?
What did the marshmallows represent in our models?
How do you think we could solve the problem of the collapsing cube?

The pretzels did not work sticking to the marshmellows. They did not stick to the pretzels because you need the big marshmellows.

The pretzels sticks were the edges . The marshmelows were the corner. To make a cube you can use glue to make the pretzel sticks and marshmellows stick together.

I think that the pretzel sticks were for the edges. And the marshmellows were the connections I think. Also I think if we use tooth picks and gum drops it will work better.

The pretzel sticks stood for the edges of the three dimentional figure that we were at least trying to make.

The marshmellows stood for the verticies on the three dimetional shapes.

I think that the the shapes would of stood longer if we would of used gumdrops because they are more stickier in the inside and it is probably more sturdy.

The pretzles stand for edges. The marshmellows stand for the verticese. The cube would of standed better if the marshmellows where fatter and thicker.
